Title: Quantum Phases and Nonequilibrium Dynamics in Circuit QED lattices

Abstract:

Circuit quantum electrodynamics describes the interaction between microwave photons and nonlinear superconducting circuits. Successful fabrication of such devices in a number of labs worldwide has led to a host of experimental and theoretical studies, often aiming at the challenging goal of building a quantum computer with circuit QED hardware. I will briefly review the state of the art of circuit QED in this context, and then turn to a more recent and, perhaps, less daunting idea: harnessing circuit QED lattices for the purpose of quantum simulation. Zero-‐temperature theory predicts a quantum phase transition akin to the well-‐known superfluid to Mott insulator transition for the polaritons inside such a lattice. I will discuss why the nature of polaritons as well as the latest experimental progress make circuit QED lattices an interesting quantum simulator for nonequilibrium many-‐body physics.

Tea/coffee & biscuits will be served at 11h00
