DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nNITheP cordially invites you to a seminar by \nProfessor Elmer Rosinger \nGottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Basic Research Institute & University of Pretoria \nWhat If Quantum Theory Violates All Mathematics? \nDate: Monday\, 26th November 2018\nTime: 10h00 -11h00\nVenue: NITheP Seminar Room\, 3rd Floor\, H-Block \n \nAbstract: It is shown by using a rather elementary argument in Mathematical Logic that {\it if} indeed\, quantum theory does violate the famous Bell Inequalities\, then quantum theory {\it must} inevitably also violate {\it all} valid mathematical statements\, and in particular\, such basic algebraic relations like $0 = 0\,~ 1 = 1\,~ 2 = 2\,~ 3 = 3\, \ldots$ and so on … \\ An interest in that result is due to the following three alternatives which it {\it imposes} upon both Physics and Mathematics : \\ \n1) Quantum Theory is inconsistent. \\\n2) Quantum Theory together with Mathematics are inconsistent. \\\n3) Mathematics is inconsistent. \\\nIn this regard one should recall that\, up until now\, it is {\it not} known whether Mathematics is indeed consistent.\\ \n\nThe flyer of the event can be found here: Prof Rosinger \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nNITheP cordially invites you to a seminar by \nDr Marco Tomamichel \nUniversity of Technology\, Sydney \nEfficient online quantum state estimation using a matrix- exponentiated gradient method \nDate: Monday\, 26th November 2018\nTime: 11h30 -12h30\nVenue: NITheP Seminar Room\, 3rd Floor\, H-Block \n \nAbstract: We explore an online algorithm for quantum state estimation based on the matrix exponentiated gradient method previously used in machine learning. We show convergence of the estimate in probability to the true state in the case of noiseless measurements with a constant learning rate\, and in the case of noisy measurements with an adaptive learning rate. We then propose to use running averages of the measurement statistics and a constant learning rate to overcome the noise problem. The proposed algorithm is numerically compared with batch maximum-likelihood and least-squares estimators. SUMMARY:Introduction to Open Quantum Systems
DESCRIPTION:As part of our weekly Open Quantum System meeting we will give a couple of introductory lectures on Open Quantum Systems. The first lecture will present one of the general methods used to derive the famous Markovian master equations. The main approximations will also be discussed. In the next lectures applications to an electromagnetic cavity mode interacting with thermal light and to two-level atoms interacting with thermal baths will be presented. \n
