Webinar: Space-based quantum communication towards global quantum network by Prof Juan Yin

July 2 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am UTC+2

Abstract: Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a theoretically secure way of sharing secret keys between remote users. Previous work has demonstrated QKD along up to 500 kilometres of coiled optical fibre in a laboratory, or from a satellite to a ground station up to 1200 kilometres away. However, real-world application between two users has been limited to around 100kilometres. Free-space quantum communication with satellites opens a promising avenue for global secure quantum network and large-scale test of quantum foundations. The talk will introduce some of the latest results from Micius satellite, including entanglement-based QKD between two ground stations separated by 1120 kilometres. Finally, the talk will also cover the future research directions towards global quantum network.
